High-achieving freshmen inducted into national honor society

Some 300 UConn freshmen were honored for their academic successes at the Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) induction ceremony March 27, in Rome Ballroom. ALD is a national freshman honor society for exceptional scholars who have earned a grade point average of 3.5 or better during their first year or term at the University. More than 1,000 students University-wide were eligible for the honor. The society has more than 80 years of tradition honoring the best first-year students at more than 235 institutions of higher education. Its mission is to encourage superior academic achievement, and to assist students in developing meaningful goals.
“We are excited to offer high-achieving first-year students the opportunity to join Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society,” says David Ouimette, director of first-year programs. The society offers its members opportunities for scholarships, internships, and leadership roles. The University has not had a formal ALD initiation ceremony since 1997. “Undertaking the renewal of Alpha Lambda Delta, although challenging, has been very fulfilling,” said Kristin Brooks, president of the UConn chapter. “I’m delighted by the number of students who were proud enough of their accomplishments to join ALD.”
Students who were honored say it takes hard work and balance to maintain high grades. “You have to know the difference between what you have to do and what you want to do,” says Timothy Murphy. Murphy plans to study the sciences. Cleo Rahmy says she keeps on top of her school work: “It’s important not to miss a class.” Rahmy plans to study education. Krista Burnham says, “School has always been my first priority. I set a straight A or A minus goal for myself, and with hard work and devotion, I have achieved it thus far.” She hopes to major in secondary English education.

STORRS -- Some 300 freshmen at the University of Connecticut will be honored for their academic successes at the Alpha Lambda Delta induction ceremony at 5 p.m. today in the Lewis B. Rome Ballroom.
ALD is a national freshman honor society for exceptional scholars who have earned a grade point average of 3.5 or better. The society has more than 80 years of tradition honoring the best first-year students at more than 235 institutions of higher education.
Honorees who live in Eastern Connecticut: Erin Pryor, Bozrah; Andrew Hatt, Canterbury; James Randall, Colchester; Tara Case, Ledyard; William O'Hearn III, North Franklin; John Babcock, Niantic; Bret Siekierski and Monica Debski, both of North Grosvenordale; Kaylee Czajka and Kastley Marvin, both of Norwich; Laura Gasiorek and Caitlin Hayes, both of Pomfret Center; Stephanie Edwards of Quaker Hill and Katie Johnson of Willimantic.
